NCEA Level 3 History Course

The Course

The year 13 course is made up of a broad survey of English history from 1558 - 1667. Within this survey three specific areas will be examined.

  • Topic One Economy and Society
  • Topic Two Government and Politics
  • Topic Three Revolution, Republic and Restoration

You will also complete a research task which provides an opportunity to achieve the two internal (school assessed) achievement standards.

Skills

History draws upon your skills in key areas of reading, writing and analysis. In your course of study this year, activities will aim to extend and develop your skills while you acquire knowledge of the topics. We focus on three broad categories of skills:

  • Information gathering: The ability to find and select information from a variety of sources and resources.
  • Information processing: Skills in sifting and classifying information to distinguish fact from opinion, identity cause and effect, bias etc. The ability to form sound judgements and make valid generalisations also feature strongly.
  • Presentation: Presenting and supporting argument and explanation in a variety of forms: essays, reports, visual presentations, debates etc.

You will already possess most of these skills to a greater or lesser degree. Your studies in History – and many of your other subjects – will aim to extend, refine and focus them as the year goes on.
